Parisian inspired French bistro set to open in a historic Stockport building

The Winter’s Grade II listed building

A French bistro taking its inspiration from Paris is set to open in Stockport’s Underbank’s historic Winter’s building later this year.

Led by husband and wife co-owners – chef Marc Molé and Rachel Winter Jones – Bistro Marc at Winter’s will be a cosy French bistro, offering comfort food, such as French onion soup, croque-monsieur, boeuf bourguignon, pot-au-feu, crème brulée and other French favourites.

The bistro will offer affordable à la carte and fixed price menus and there are also plans hold events such as wine tastings, with other events also in the pipeline.

The focus will be on using fresh local produce from Stockport Indoor Markets and other local suppliers.

Chef Marc Molé was born and raised in Paris and is passionate about sharing his love of the Parisian bistro experience; good quality food and a relaxed atmosphere.

He trained in Washington D.C. with the former French head chef to the French Ambassador.

Marc and Rachel said: “We are so excited and honoured to have been given the opportunity to open our French bistro in the iconic Winter’s Grade II listed building.

“We will offer a taste of quality French cuisine, with local produce, at a reasonable price.

“We are also very proud to be part of Stockport’s regeneration programme on the Underbanks, and can’t wait to welcome the people of the Greater Stockport area to Bistro Marc at Winter’s. We want to hear the Winter’s clock chime again!”

The restoration of the building will include sensitive repairs and restoration of the automated clock and figures.

Over the years, the building has operated in many guises, including an optician, jewellers, a restaurant, and most recently as a pub, managed by Manchester brewery Joseph Holt.

Cllr David Meller, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “Since announcing in April that work was underway at this iconic building, speculation has been rife as to the new tenants and it’s great news that we can finally introduce you to Marc and Rachel.

“I’m confident their passion and energy to deliver an authentic French bistro, while still preserving the heritage and history of the building will be a huge asset to the town centre and I wish them well in their new venture, Bistro Marc at Winter’s will be a fantastic addition to a growing number of restaurants in Stockport.”
