Depot opening marks milestone for roll-out of superfast broadband

The opening of a new depot in Chester has marked the start of a major digital infrastructure upgrade for the north west – and dozens of new jobs for the area.

Hundreds of thousands of homes will be connected to a new full fibre broadband network following a partnership between digital infrastructure specilaist Telent and CityFibre.

Telent is installing connections as part of CityFibre’s £4bn Gigabit City Investment Programme, which will eventually reach 8 million homes nationwide. At the height of the project, ten thousand homes a month will be connected to the new network.

Telent Infrastructure Services Managing Director, Ric Welsby said: “The massive investment in new telecoms networks reflects the growing use which people have for ultrafast networks – for home working, study, gaming and entertainment.

“Our new depot with CityFibre in Chester is just one of the many sites around the country where we need the help of new people to join us to build the ultrafast broadband infrastructure that we all want.”

The need to install and connect more than 4 million metres of new cables has created dozens of new jobs – from back office, to operational and managerial roles – in the Chester area.

The new network will use the latest fibre optic cable as it connects the user directly to lightning-fast speeds.

Michelle Van Der Peet, CityFibre Regional Build Director, North West said: “This is a game changer for Chester’s connectivity; people will be amazed by the difference which the full fibre experience will bring to their work and leisure.

“We’re excited to be working closely with Cheshire West and Chester Council and our build partner Telent, bringing the benefits of next-generation technology to local homes and businesses across the city.”
