Cheshire environmental, engineering and technical services business, RSK Group, has extended its reach in Australia.

Binnies, which was acquired by Helsby-based RSK during its 2020/2021 financial year, has formed Binnies Australia Pty Ltd, representing a significant milestone for Binnies and RSK Group.

Binnies, an established name in the water and environmental markets with a 100-year pedigree of providing innovative solutions to complex engineering and environmental needs, can now add Australia to its international business locations, which already include countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and the Philippines.

In February this year, Binnies UK managing director Scott Aitken, Binnies Singapore managing director William Yong and Binnies director of international and special projects, Gary Laing, met with clients, business partners and existing RSK business leaders in south east Queensland, Sydney and Melbourne.

The engagements started introducing Binnies into the Australian water and environmental markets and established a number of potential key business relationships and opportunities.

These meetings also helped Binnies to understand the challenges faced by Australian water utility companies. In particular, Binnies will be working in partnership with Pensar, the latest acquisition by RSK Group in Australia, on several design and build opportunities and growth partnering strategies, adding Binnies’ digital engineering, process technology, construction and commissioning capabilities to Pensar’s significant design and build capabilities and expertise in Australia.

RSK companies in Australia already employ more than 400 staff.

Scott Aitken said: “There are many common challenges faced by water utility companies, but we also recognise the unique nature of some of the challenges that Australian utilities face. We are excited to be able to offer our services and solutions that aim to help solve some of the huge challenges arising from population growth, climate change, asset resilience and meeting sustainability aims and objectives.”

Having identified a number of UK staff keen to relocate to Australia to share their knowledge and expertise, recruitment is also taking place for new staff to be based in the shared offices with other RSK Group companies, initially in Brisbane, south east Queensland.

Gary Young, RSK group divisional director, said: “It’s great to get the new venture off the ground. It is also exciting to be working so soon on live business opportunities to support Australian clients, as well as collaborating with several other RSK sister companies to share Binnies’ complementary expertise.”

RSK Group chief executive, Alan Ryder, said: “The water sector is an increasingly important part of RSK and represents a significant part of our business.

“With the addition of Binnies Australia in the Asia Pacific region, I look forward to continuing our support and commitment to our clients and partners in the region and on a global scale to creating a more sustainable and resilient water future for our tomorrow.”
