Blackburn’s new £21m health centre opens

A NEW £21 million health centre has opened its doors in Blackburn.
The new Barbara Castle Way Health Centre in Blackburn was completed on time and to budget by Preston-based Eric Wright Construction.
The 86,000 sq ft centre has 121 clinical rooms and will offer GP services, dentistry, primary care mental health, opthalmology, audiology, physiotherapy and other clinical services. It will also have a mobile MRI unit, an X-ray unit and its own pharmacy.
It will employ 250 staff and replace three existing centres in the Blackburn with Darwen Borough.
Eric Wright Group associate director, Christine Winstanley, said: “This scheme will locate health provision nearer to the patient with a transport infrastructure that supports easier access for a wider cohort of patients.
“It is a modern, fit-for-purpose building that is designed around a patient pathway, to enhance the patient experience and provide more positive outcomes.”
Eric Wright Group built the centre under the NHS Lift initiative and will be responsible for managing the facility over the next 25 years.
Sir Bill Taylor, chair of NHS Blackburn with Darwen Care Trust Plus, said: “I would like to extend my warmest thanks to the Eric Wright Group for the fantastic job that they have done with the centre. They have delivered a state-of-the-art, health facility that will serve the people of Blackburn with Darwen for many years to come.”
