Wates wins £5.8m east Manchester college job

WATES Construction has been awarded a £5.8m contract to build a new specialist further education college in east Manchester.

Bridge College will provide specialist teaching and learning for disabled people, and a centre of excellence providing educational and therapy support to students with learning difficulties.

The college is a joint venture between Manchester College and The Together Trust and is being built on a 30,000 sq ft site in Openshaw which was previously a factory for Rolls Royce.

A new bridge will also link the site to Manchester College’s existing Openshaw campus.

Work on the college began last month and is due to complete next summer.

John Shannon, business unit director for Wates Construction in the North West, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract by The Together Trust and The Manchester College to deliver such a unique project, and one which will significantly serve the educational needs of the college students and the wider community. “
