Poultry supplier Gafoor sold in pre-pack administration

ONE of the country’s largest suppliers of Halal meat, Gafoor Poultry Products, has been sold in a pre-pack administration safeguarding around 150 jobs.

West Midlands-based Irwin Insolvency was appointed to handle the affairs of Preston-based Gafoor at the High Court in Birmingham on July 31.

Administrator Gerald Irwin told TheBusinessDesk.com the company’s assets were sold to a new company, Gafoor Pure Halal, which is owned by a member of the Patel family – which also controlled the original company.

In its most recent accounts, filed in January for the year to the end of October 2010, Gafoor Poultry Products made a profit of £1.4m on turnover of more than £52.4m.

Mr Irwin said: “The business encountered some trading difficulties and also some bad debts. Sales had reduced in the last year as a consequence.

“The good news is that we have been able to preserve all 150 jobs on the site.”

Gafoor Pure Halal was incorporated in Leicester in December 2011. Its sole director is listed at Companies House as Ozayr Patel.

Based on Fletcher Road, Preston, Gafoor operates from a purpose-built site, and processes around 450,000 birds per week. The company supplies both the wholesale and retail sectors throughout the UK, including the NHS and HM Prison Service.
