Accountant Alexandra launches The Puddling Club boutique

A FORMER accountant has launched a niche retail business aimed at expectant mothers.

Alexandra Macleod’s investment in The Pudding Club in Knutsford was born out of frustration after she was unable to find fashionable and comfortable maternity jeans when she was pregnant with her son.

Her new boutique, on Minshull Street in the Cheshire town, sells stylish maternity clothes for every occasion and stocks a wide range of maternity designer denim which was previously only available to buy in London.

Having trained with PWC and then worked for Manchester firms Ford Campbell and Campbell Woolley, Mrs Macleod has worked in private business for Caldwell Group.

She said: “We are delighted to open our first store in Knutsford and the reception so far has been extremely positive – sales are good, despite summer not traditionally being a great time for retail.

“Launching the business has been a white-knuckle ride, and I am encouraged by the start we’ve made.

“Our vision for The Pudding Club is for beautiful clothes and excellent customer service both of which are difficult for pregnant women to find in the North West.

“Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you don’t care about fashion.  Women want to feel good whilst being comfortable.  Whether it’s advising on the perfect pair of maternity jeans, smart clothes for the office or a dress for that special occasion we can help,” she added.

In time she would like to open a store in other locations, with Harrogate and Leamington Spa in Warwickshire already on the radar.

North West law firm Brabners Chaffe Street has acted for The Pudding Club, on its acquisition of a four-year lease.

Dewi Paddock, property associate at Brabners Chaffe Street, said: “Despite the tough market conditions this deal demonstrates that there is still a demand from occupiers for well located retail premises.

“It is a great example of how young entrepreneurs with a solid business plan and a clear customer focussed business idea can take on empty premises on the UKs high streets and start up a new retail offering.”
