CABE calls for Salford Tesco to be rejected

A PLAN to build a huge 130,000 sq ft Tesco in Salford has been criticised by architectural advisory body CABE, which says that the proposed store is too big and could have a detrimental effect on existing shops and ongoing regeneration efforts in nearby Pendleton.

CABE’S submission to government planners argued that the huge proposed store with associated car parking is based on “an outdated out-of-town model” that was an inefficient use of land.

It has reccommended to Salford City Council that the scheme, which has been designed by architectural firm Smith Smalley, be rejected.

Tesco has argued that the store would bring new investment to the area, creating 600 new jobs. The supermarket giant also added that a regeneration panel would be formed to ensure that half of these would go to long-term unemployed local people.
