Design firm wins contract with famous Rose Bowl Stadium

STOCKPORT-based design consultancy Mather & Co has successfully fought off stiff competition Stateside in its bid to develop a feasibility concept for a new attraction and stadium tour to upgrade the visitor experience at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena in California.

The Rose Bowl is the epitome of a true American national treasure and is a National Historic Landmark.

As the proud home of the “Granddaddy of Them All”, the annual New Year’s Day Rose Bowl Game, UCLA Bruins Football, the Americafest Fourth of July celebration, concerts, the World’s Largest Flea Market, filmings and other special events, the iconic venue is part of the everyday sports vernacular in the US and internationally.

Built in 1922 and currently the 12th largest stadium in the United States, the Rose Bowl has earned its world class reputation by hosting five NFL Super Bowl Games, cycling in the 1932 Summer Olympics, the 1984 Olympic football gold medal match, the 1994 World Cup Final, the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals, CONCACAF matches and other major sporting events.

The venue also plays host to major music and entertainment tours each year, including this year’s Super Bowl halftime show performer Coldplay who will play the venue in August 2016.

Other acts to have graced the historic Rose Bowl surface are U2 (2009), One Direction (2014), The Rolling Stones (1994), Pink Floyd (1994) and more.

Mather & Co. will be working with Grant Leisure, which is conducting an economic feasibility study for the potential project at the Rose Bowl, with the aim being to help realise the unique assets of the stadium and the surrounding area to create a first class visitor attraction.

Mather & Co managing director Chris Mather said: “Pasadena Rose Bowl Stadium is not only a new client for us, but also our first venture into the American market.

“This is a major milestone in the expansion of Mather & Co.’s prominence and visibility on the world stage. We hope that this is the first step towards more interesting and notable projects in the USA.”

Dedan Brozino, executive director of the Rose Bowl Stadium, said: “Mather & Co. has an incredibly impressive international portfolio that has made them a real stand out in this industry. Their past projects fall in line with our venue’s historical significance and we feel that their concept will capture the spirit of the Rose Bowl and help in the development of the stadium and its legacy.”
