Halliwells deal boosts BLG’s numbers

LAW firm Barlow Lyde & Gilbert (BLG) has reported a strong start to the year, with profits for its six months to October 30 up 58% and income up 17% on the same period a year ago.

The London-based insurance law specialist said that it had been buoyed by strong performances across all of its offices, as well as its “significant expansion in Manchester” during the summer, when it bought the insurance practice of the collapsed Halliwells business in a deal worth up to £2.5m.

BLG chief executive David Jabbari said: “We have had to take some painful decisions over the last 18 months to ensure the firm was structured in the best way for us to continue to deliver market-leading advice to our clients. These decisions are now bearing fruit.

“We are looking at strategic opportunities for further expansion both in the City and internationally, while continuing to focus on our core markets and increasing profitability.”

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert first opened in Manchester two years ago. In September, it moved its 250 staff in the city into new offices at the Chancery Place development, where it has taken four floors of office space.

In the year to April 30, BLG made a profit of £22.3m on income of £86.2m.
