Start date confirmed for construction of £25m Wiltshire leisure centre

Wiltshire Council has confirmed that construction of a £25m leisure centre in Trowbridge town centre will start next month.

As recently confirmed, London-headquartered Pellikaan Construction will lead the build of the centre, which will be built on the Wiltshire Council-owned East Wing site, opposite County Hall on Bythesea Road.

In developing the centre Wiltshire Council has worked with Alliance Leisure, the delivery partner for the UK Leisure Framework (UKLF).

Site set up will begin on April 7. The car park on the left-hand side of the East Wing site (the ‘Asda end’), which is often used by members of the public in the evenings and at weekends, will not be available from that date.

Construction traffic will access the site via the main entrance just off the mini roundabout opposite County Hall and the council said there should not be any disruption to the public while this first phase of the project gets underway. The council will provide further updates for the duration of the project.

Pellikaan was responsible for the Melksham Community Campus, which opened in 2022.

Parvis Khansari, Wiltshire Council corporate director – place, said: “Work on the new Trowbridge Leisure Centre will formally get underway in April and we’ll make sure to provide regular updates as this project continues.”

The centre will include a six-lane, 25m swimming pool   and 7m x 13m learner pool, a gym with 120 exercise stations, two studios and an immersive spin studio, a community meeting room and café along with a TAGactive adventure area targeted at 12 to 16 year olds and a ‘live well’ suite providing a dedicated space for older people to exercise.

To support the council’s target of being carbon neutral by 2030, the project has been designed with a fabric-first approach to ensure it will be as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels will be installed on available roof space, helping to power the all-electric building.

This will be further supported by external landscaping to create a ‘green island’ with walking, cycling and wheeling travel routes woven in.

The existing Trowbridge Sports Centre on Frome Road will continue to operate and retain its diving facilities, sports hall and squash courts.
