House of Fraser to close Cheltenham historic department store
House of Fraser has confirmed it is to close Cheltenham’s oldest department store later this year.
Cavendish House opened for business in 1832 on the town’s most prominent address The Promenade.
But House of Fraser has now revealed it has earmarked the store for closure as it looks to cut costs.
The store is due to close by the second week of April and staff were told the news yesterday.
House of Fraser went into administration in 2018 after creditors failed to secure a sale.
Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct bought the company and its assets out of administration for £90m.
had completed a sale of ‘substantially all of the group’s business assets’ for £90 million.
Since then a number of stores have closed and the latest to be axed include Guilford, Solihull and Cheltenham.
The firm intends to cut its total number of outlets from 59 to 31 over the coming months.
Gloucestershire’s other House of Fraser store in Cirencester closed its doors five years ago.
