Cornish energy group gets further backing for Welsh tidal energy project

Morlais Landfall Substation, in Anglesey

Falmouth-based Inyanga Marine Energy Group has been awarded a further 10MW for its tidal energy project in Anglesey in the Government-run renewables auction.

The latest auction round delivered 131 new green infrastructure projects, which will power the equivalent of 11m British homes.

The 10MW contract awarded to Inyanga Marine Energy Group for its HydroWing project at Morlais is the largest tidal energy contract awarded for a project through Allocation Round 6 (AR6) of the UK government’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme. It doubles the scale of their project to 20MW.

Richard Parkinson, chief executive of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, said it was “a big vote of confidence in our innovative tidal energy technology”.

He added: “This allows us to build on economies of scale from our portfolio of projects to achieve commercially viable generation projects. This award is a testament to the hard work of our pioneering team and our relentless drive to make HydroWing competitive.”

The Contracts for Difference is a UK government scheme that aims to bring forward new clean energy, helping the UK achieve energy security.

The auction round included securing what will be Europe’s largest and second largest windfarm projects, Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4 off the Yorkshire coast.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has said it is looking to accelerate ways that the Contracts for Difference system and other energy policies can be expanded, so that more renewable energy can be connected to the grid, and quicker.
