Council to start ‘vital’ repairs to Hinkley Point C road

Hinkley Point

A major road into Hinkley Point C nuclear power station will be closed overnight for more than a month as Somerset Council carries out “vital” repair works.

The phased work will take place on the C182 between the entrance to the plant and the Cannington Roundabout. The council’s specialist resurfacing contractor Heidelberg Materials is starting work on Monday 23 September and the scheme is expected to complete on Tuesday 26 October.

Work will be at night between 7pm and 5am. A full road closure for each phase will be in place, but access will be maintained for residents and businesses.

There are three phases to the work:
Week commencing 23 September: Wick Lane to Cock Lane
Week commencing 7 October: Wick Lane to site entrance
Week commencing 14 October: Series of short sections between Monk Lane junction and Cannington roundabout.

Cllr Richard Wilkins said: “This is a vital route for what is one of the biggest construction projects in Europe so it is really important that we carry out this essential maintenance to safeguard the life span of the road for both business traffic and for local residents.

“We have worked closely with the team at Hinkley Point C to ensure the scheme is delivered as quickly as possible to minimise disruption for residents on the route and the plant traffic.”
