BAE Systems has won a £285m contract to upgrade the combat systems on Royal Navy vessels.

The RECODE (Real-time Combat System Open Data Enablers) programme will help support more than 200 jobs, including at the defence giant’s site in Filton.

Commodore Phil Game, defence equipment and support, Royal Navy, said: “This programme will ensure our Royal Navy vessels have robust, future-ready combat systems.

“By working closely with industry partners, we’re not only enhancing our naval capabilities but also supporting skilled jobs and expertise in the UK defence sector.”

The work will also be carried out at BAE’s sites in Dorchester, New Malden, Frimley and Portsmouth.

Last week provided a reminder of the role of the Royal Navy in UK waters. The government revealed it had monitored a Russian spy vessel in the English Channel that it believes is used for intelligence and mapping critical infrastructure on the sea floor.
