Hospice launches latest retail ‘superstore’

St Peter’s Hospice has launched its second retail ‘superstore’ with the opening of a new unit in Portishead.

The store will specialise in furniture – both preloved and new, as well as stocking homeware, electricals, white goods and preloved clothing.

Located at the retail park on Wyndham Way and following the success of the first new-concept superstore, which opened on Jacob’s Wells Road in March 2024, the Portishead setting will offer free furniture collection and a handy delivery service for large items, as well as an easy to use donation station.

St Peter’s Hospice retail director, John Broomhead, said: “We’re delighted to be opening our second superstore in Portishead, and our largest superstore yet! These stores are slightly different to the ones you see on the high street, in that they focus primarily on furniture and homeware with smaller sections for clothing and accessories.

“We wanted to create a store which offered great quality preloved items for the home at affordable prices. We know that our customers really value sustainability and that extends to items in the home too. The gems you expect to find in our smaller charity shops are there to be found in our Superstores, but on a much larger scale.”

The store is the second St Peter’s Hospice shop in Portishead, with the boutique on the high street specialising in clothing, vintage items and children’s clothes and toys.

Broomhead added: “The people of Portishead have always been hugely supportive of our first store – shopping there and generously donating items – so we’re pleased to be expanding our presence in the town and offering shoppers something slightly different. It’s a great location and I think it will become a welcome asset to the community.”

St Peter’s Hospice cares for adults with life-limiting conditions in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. All care is provided free of charge, but the charity relies on gifts in wills, donations, fundraising and money raised through its retail shops to deliver its services.

Shop manager Jason Bamfield said: “Our Superstore is a great place to find everything you need for your home and wardrobe. As well as providing a sustainable way to shop, we’re also raising money for a really important local cause and ensuring people have access to the best possible end of life care.

“Our delivery service is a great perk, with our team on hand to deliver large items direct to your front door. Similarly, if you have large furniture to donate we ‘ll collect for free, making it as hassle-free as possible.

“We’re on the look out for volunteers to help too. Volunteers are essential to the running of our shops and give us 20% more workforce power meaning we can achieve so much more for the people we support.

“Volunteering with us is hugely rewarding, a great way to make new friends and an opportunity to learn new skills in retail. We have different roles and hours available so there’s something to suit everyone.”
