Host of facilities closed as council dropped by insurers

A host of public areas in a Somerset town have been shut down after a town council was dropped by its insurers.

People in Clevedon, North Somerset, are “strictly forbidden” from accessing their allotments, Herbert Gardens open space and seafront tennis courts.

Clevedon Town Council said it had been notified by its insurers of an issue with its policy.

The facilities were closed at 17:00 BST on Monday and the council said it is “working hard to resolve” the matter.

Other facilities run by Clevedon Town Council, including its own offices, are also out of bounds and will remain closed until further notice.

In a statement, the authority said: “Clevedon Town Council has been notified by its insurers of an issue with its insurance policy. This means that the council will be without insurance from 5pm on Monday 14 August.

“The council is working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible and will provide further updates.

“In the meantime, the following services and facilities will be temporarily closed from 5pm on Monday 14 August. Access to these services and facilities during this time is strictly forbidden.”
