Thousands of jobs to be created as scale of Longbridge regeneration scheme is revealed

A regeneration project by St. Modwen is to create 7,500 jobs and 1,300 new homes.

The Longbride site in Birmingham was once an unused 75 acre car plant, but St. Modwen has developed the brownfield land into a community.

The total of full-time jobs created at Longbridge is now 10,500, which is 75% more than the original site of MG Rover in 2005.

Already, offices, a town centre, park, and facilities such as Bournville College and the Royal Centre of Defence Medicine have been developed, and the new planning applications are expected to be determined by Spring 2022.

The new phase includes the MG Rover site with plans to create new homes, 10 acres of green space and perverse buildings such as International HQ, Roundhouse and Car Assembly Building.

In addition, West Works site will produce 900,000 sq ft of commercial space and 350 homes from a partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority and a £6m grant funding contribution.

Brownfield regeneration was marked as key in the Chancellor’s budget in October with £1.8bn set aside, as the government targets to deliver 300,000 homes a year.

Sarwjit Sambhi, CEO, St. Modwen said: “The success of Longbridge proves that thriving communities, beautiful homes, and thousands of jobs can be created by regenerating disused land, and that this must be a national priority to help solve the housing crisis.”

Rt. Hon Christopher Pincher MP, Minister for Housing said: “The development is an excellent example of what can be achieved when derelict land is used to regenerate local areas, create jobs and help people onto the property ladder.”

Gary Sambrook MP said: “When MG Rover closed in 2005, 5,000 local livelihoods were lost. The work of St. Modwen to regenerate the site and deliver 10,000 new jobs brings a new future for our community.”
