Arena set for £20m makeover

THE NEC Group has launched the next phase of its plans to refurbish the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham with a £20m tender notice.
The NIA turned 20 in October and last year its parent company announced it had appointed a team of experts to look at the renovation possibilities of the live ents venue.
The notice said the group had recognised an opportunity existed to upgrade the NIA’s public areas and earn more commercial revenues.
It added: “The principle objectives of the upgrade are: to improve the customer sense of arrival and enjoyment of the facilities pre, during and post show.
“To increase the customer spend on food, beverage and merchandise whilst attending an event.
“To provide a platform from which the opportunity to sell the arena title rights, sponsorship opportunities and second tier/general advertising can be maximised.”
Work will centre on the arena floor, concourse and two mezzanine levels but the arena bowel itself does not form part of the tender.
The NIA will continue to function as an events venue throughout the construction work.
Further details of the refurbishment project are due to outlined to the media tomorrow by NEC Group chief executive Paul Thandi.
