Edgbaston chosen for Birmingham’s first drive-through Costa Coffee

PLANNING permission has been secured for a new drive-through coffee shop in Birmingham.
The facility in Calthorpe Road, Edgbaston – part of Calthorpe Estates – will be operated by Costa Coffee and will be its first such outlet in the city.
The scheme involves the conversion and extension of a Grade II listed building. Brooke Smith Planning successfully advised Calthorpe Estates on this project.
The building, which was used for commercial purposes, will include an internal seating area as well as the drive-through element. Designers were keen the integrity of the original town house was conserved and the plan has been handled sensitively to ensure that although having a contemporary look, the fabric of the existing Georgian building has been maintained.
Planner Jennifer Towers, of Brooke Smith Planning said: “This is a significant development within this historic Georgian area of the city. The building lends itself to this imaginative new use, which we are confident will prove popular in the area.”
