M5 in Worcestershire badly congested following serious accident

Motorists using the M5 in Worcestershire faced a tough journey after an accident partially blocked the northbound carriageway causing delays of up to an hour.
The accident happened between Junction 6 (Worcester/Kidderminster) and Junction 5 (Droitwich/Bromsgrove). The cause of the crash isn’t known.
Highways England had been reporting delays of up to an hour in the area, with estimates that things would not improve until after rush hour.
The current (17.10) situation is that all lanes are now open and traffic is running smoothly with delays of only around 10 minutes.
Earlier, queues on the northbound carriageway were stretching back to Junction 7 for Worcester city centre.
Motorists were advised to avoid the motorway if possible or source alternative routes.
The section of motorway affected is currently the subject of long-running roadworks.
