Galliford Try awarded £16m Birmingham hotel contract

CONSTRUCTION group Galliford Try has been awarded a new contract to build a £16m hotel in Birmingham city centre.

The nine-storey, 174-bedroom four-star hotel, next to Moor Street Station, is being built for operator Hotel La Tour.

Hotel La Tour has awarded the contract after it secured the land from Quintain Estates. The hotel is planned as part of the City Park Gate development and is intended to capitalise on a growing need for city centre hotel space as well as with one eye on the future and the development of the nearby High Speed 2 rail link.

The scheme was initially larger with plans for 204 bedrooms but the design has now been scaled back slightly following the recession.

The hotel is planned to have a restaurant, bar, gym, conference facilities and around 25 car parking spaces. Estimates are that it could create around 50 new jobs.

The site is currently used as car park and is situated in the block covered by Moor Street Queensway, Masshouse Lane and Albert Street.

Galliford Try has also secured a £8.7m contract to construct a new motorway service area at Cherwell Valley in Oxfordshire for Moto Hospitality Ltd.

Greg Fitgerald, Galliford Try chief executive, said: “We are delighted to secure these two contracts which demonstrate our broad expertise in the commercial sector.”
