Multi-million pound Priory Club plans take next step

PLANS for a multi-million pound revamp of one of Birmingham’s best-known sporting venues have taken a step closer after a full planning application was submitted.
Edgbaston Priory Club is hoping to carry out a wholesale revamp of the club, enabling it to continue hosting major grass court tennis tournaments such as the women’s pre-Wimbledon AEGON Classic.
The project will see demolition of the indoor tennis building, bowling club pavilion, sheds and a partial demolition of the clubhouse.
Six indoor tennis courts will be built and the clubhouse, which also hosts the national racketball championships each May, will be extended and undergo a refurbishment.
The plans also include a sunken tournament tennis court while existing outdoor courts will be refurbished alongside two new floodlit artificial courts, parking, landscaping, walls and access.
Birmingham-based Glenn Howells Architects and law firm Clarke Willmott are working with the club on the project which has received backing from the Lawn Tennis Association to the tune of £5m.
A public consultation on the scheme ends on February 15 and the club says it is hopeful of securing planning permission from Birmingham City Council by the end of March.
If given the green light, construction on the indoor tennis centre is expected to start in July.
