Call for tenders kicks off university’s £300m building spree

THE University of Birmingham is planning £300m worth of construction and refurbishment work at its Victorian campus in Edgbaston.

Both new build and regeneration projects valued between £300,000 and £60m are planned across teaching, research, conference and office buildings.

The red brick institute is in the fledgling stages of the process and is currently seeking to appoint an architect to lead a multi-disciplinary design team consisting of mechanical and electrical engineers, structural engineers and other design specialists.

Among the possible projects in the pipeline are plans to refurbish two science buildings, develop two existing buildings to provide a new base for MBA programmes, refurbish all or part of a Grade II listed building and construct a 200-bedroom conference facility.

A spokesperson for the university told TheBusinessDesk.com that the projects would take place over the next five to 10 years if they were given the green light.

Last year the university’s 16-storey Muirhead Tower reopened after undergoing a two-year, £40m refurbishment programme.

Architects interested in tendering for the programme have until December 17 to request documents.
