Gleeds Birmingham rides Indian property boom

A BIRMINGHAM consultancy has won a major contract to provide cost management services to one of India’s largest mixed use property schemes.

Gleeds Birmingham, an international construction management consultancy has been appointed cost manager for the first phase of a scheme to redevelop a 35 acre site in Vikhroli, Mumbai.

The city centre project, which has been launched by one of the India’s most successful property developers, the Godrej Group, is called The Trees. At 2.8 million square feet it will house premium office space, residential towers, high-street retail and five star hospitality all centred around a large four acre landscaped park. The Trees will be built in three phases and Gleeds started on site at the end of January.

The first building called Godrej One and will be one of India’s leading commercial projects and will bring various Godrej Group companies under one roof.  Of a total area of 750,000 square feet in Godrej One, 250,000 square feet will be used as the headquarters for several Godrej Group companies, while the remaining 500,000 square feet will be leased to external tenants.

“We are delighted to have been appointed by the Godrej Group,” said Gleeds director Lindsay McCombe.  “This development aspires to be among the most sustainable in the world.  Cutting-edge sustainability features appear throughout the master plan and building design to ensure that energy requirements are minimized and water is conserved. Godrej Properties has applied to have Godrej One certified as LEED-Platinum, which is globally recognised as the highest rating of sustainable design.”

Joining Gleeds on the scheme will be several of the world’s most renowned consultants. These include Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the lead architects for the master planning well known for designing architectural icons such as the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, International Finance Centre 2 in Hong Kong, and the Bloomberg Headquarters in New York City.
