New plans for brace of city centre student towers

PLANS for two new towers of student accommodation in Birmingham have been submitted to the city council.
The project will see two blocks of between 11 and 16 storeys constructed, containing 492 bedrooms, alongside 5,000 sq ft of retail space on the ground floor and a new public realm.
They will be built on land next to an existing development for Aston University in Bagot Street which is due for completion next month.
Despite its proximity to the institute, this latest development will be run privately but aimed specifically at the student market.
It is being led by Liverpool-based property developer Iliad and designed by Manchester practice Formroom Architects, both of which are behind the Bagot Street project.
Formroom said planning approval was expected this autumn with work starting on site by the end of the year, for completion in 2013.
Formroom managing director Tim Groom said: “This second phase features new interiors and more of a boutique hotel style which should impress even the most discerning of students.
“The development really exemplifies the next generation of contemporary student accommodation.”
