Sindall secures multi-million pound Priory project

RUGBY-based Morgan Sindall has won the £9.1m contract to build a new sports development at one of Birmingham’s best known leisure venues.

Edgbaston Priory Club is planning to transform the tennis and squash hub over the next two years with a new permanent tennis show court, clubhouse, indoor tennis centre, gym and hospitality facilities.

The project will be split into two phases with the 33-week first part comprising the six-court indoor centre and outside show court, additional car parking and a block of four new squash courts.

Phase two, expected to start in August next year, will see the demolition and rebuilding of the clubhouse.

Edgbaston Priory hosts the annual Aegon Classic pre-Wimbledon tennis tournament and the National Racketball Championships and the development has been backed to the tune of £5m by the Lawn Tennis Association.

Club chief executive Robert Bray said: “Edgbaston Priory is delighted to appoint Morgan Sindall as main contractor for its major redevelopment.

“This is an exciting project that has great benefits for our members, local community and the city of Birmingham.

“It was essential that we appointed a main contractor with a successful track record in building leisure facilities and who would be able to keep the club operational throughout the redevelopment.”

Morgan Sindall contracts manager Ben Cushway added: “This is a very significant win for Morgan Sindall, building on our proven track record with sports and leisure facilities such as the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, Basildon Sporting Village and Royal National College for the Blind.”
