Developers given approval for 400-apartment residential scheme in Digbeth

How the scheme in Bradford Street will look

Plans for the development of more than 400 apartments on the site of derelict buildings and disused factory space in Birmingham have been approved.

ESRG Developments had submitted two separate applications for schemes to redevelop land in Digbeth with the final development comprising 422 new apartments.

Along with plans for the redevelopment of Connaught Square, the schemes are further proof of the emergence of Digbeth as a residential hotspot, driven by the arrival of HS2 in the city and the extension of the Midland Metro to the area.

The plans approved by the city’s planning committee show the redevelopment of the former Kingfield Heath building in Bradford Street, together with 234-236 Bradford Street, and their replacement with a mixed-use development comprising 293 residential units with 1,275 sqm of commercial floorspace.

The buildings, which sit between Bradford Street and Warwick Street, are in a very poor state of repair and have proved magnets for anti-social behaviour. An arson attack two years ago caused substantial damage.

The scheme proposes the demolition of the existing building – although the facade of 234-236 Bradford Street would be retained. The new building would comprise 293 apartments, split between a mixture of one and two-bedrooms over four to nine floors. Six commercial units are also planned for street level. There would be shared parking provision for 46 vehicles, with separate cycle storage.

The development is split into two main blocks – A and B. Block A would comprise 54 residential units, 60 of the cycle spaces and one of the commercial units. Block B would accommodate 239 apartments, 232 cycle spaces, five of the commercial units and a decked amenity space. Parking would be distributed evenly around the site. Building heights would vary but the tallest would be nine storeys.

ESRG has also been given permission for a separate application for land at 250 and 251 Bradford Street and 25-30 Green Street, Digbeth. This proposes a development consisting of 130 residential apartments.

The site sits on the junction of Alcester Street and Bradford Street and comprises two parcels of land – a former industrial unit with car parking and a frontage onto both Bradford Street and Green Street, and an office building which sits on the corner of Alcester Street and Bradford Street.

The proposed development would comprise 54 one bedroom and 76 two-bedroom apartments.
