Work starts on new hotel development

Construction has begun on a new hotel development in Telford.

The Travelodge scheme will underpin a new phase of development at the town’s Southwater Leisure Quarter.

The 68-bed hotel, part of a £42m expansion into the West Midlands by Travelodge, will also feature an integrated 5,000 sq ft ground floor retail and leisure unit.

The works also include delivery of an extensive public realm, comprising an events space, water feature, soft landscaping and informal seating.

The new development is due to be open next summer.

James Dunn, Head of Regeneration at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “As a forward-looking council we are delighted at the success of our investment in attracting national operators to the Southwater Leisure Quarter.

“Our hope is that both local and regional operators will consider this new unit, creating opportunities to complement the variety of great restaurants, bars and leisure facilities that we already offer.”

Situated within Telford town centre, the Southwater Leisure Quarter already includes a range of retail and leisure amenities, including an 11-screen Cineworld Imax cinema, TenPin Bowling and Mecca Bingo, and the recently-refurbished Telford Ice Rink, alongside restaurants including Coal Bar & Grill, Bella Italia, Zizzi, Wildwood and Loungers.

GVA and Wright Silverwood have been appointed as joint letting agents for the new unit.

Paul Brewer, of GVA, said the unit benefited from its position with the leisure quarter, while Andy Silverwood, of Wright Silverwood, said the leisure quarter had been an outstanding success story for Telford since it first opened and the addition of the new unit created a fantastic opportunity to enhance facilities still further.
