Route changes offer pedestrians a taste of Paradise

Paradise Birmingham - November 2017

The redevelopment of Birmingham’s Paradise Circus reaches a critical stage in its progress tomorrow (Saturday) when a pedestrian walkway through the site is opened for the first time in almost two years.

The new Centenary Way pedestrian route restores the link between Victoria Street and Broad Street, which was closed in December 2015 to allow for the demolition of the old Central Library and Paradise Forum (see below).

The changes to the site layout will see the route through Fletcher’s Walk, under the old Birmingham Conservatoire closed to allow the next stage of demolition work to begin.

The changes to the pedestrian route mean people will be able to get a close up look at progress on the One Chamberlain Square building, set to be the new home in Birmingham of PwC.

The surface level crossing on Great Charles Street is also open.

The timing of the changes is also significant because it means access to the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Victoria Square will be much easier from Broad Street and Centenary Square.

The demolition of the old Conservatoire will also mean changes to the roads around the Paradise scheme.

From Monday (November 13) one lane of Paradise Circus Queensway will be closed southbound from Sandpits to Suffolk Street Queensway. This is likely to continue until next summer when that demolition phase is due to end.

The demolition work will also mean weekend closures of both lanes of Paradise Circus Queensway southbound on January 13 and 14, 20 and 21, and 27 and 28. These will be in effect from midnight on the Friday night through to 5am on Monday morning.
