Work progresses on Doubletree By Hilton’s transformation of landmark Birmingham hotel

Work to transform one of Birmingham’s best-known hotels is well underway.

The former Royal Angus hotel located in the Snow Hill area of the city is being refurbished into a 186-bedroom, four-star DoubleTree by Hilton with a £25m investment.

The well-known venue, which was a Thistle Hotel until it closed just over a year ago, is expected to open in the Autumn 2019.

The first DoubleTree by Hilton in Birmingham, it will include two Marco Pierre White branded concepts including a Mr White’s English Chophouse restaurant and Marconi Coffee shop.

Creating up to 100 full and part-time jobs, the refurbished venue will also include four meeting rooms.

Once open the hotel will be run by Black and White Hospitality Management on behalf of Downing while RPS Group is in charge of project managing the construction work which is being undertaken by Shaylor Group.

Nick Taplin, chairman and CEO of Black and White Hospitality said: “The Royal Angus was one of Birmingham’s best-known hotels and was the epitome of style and sophistication in the 70s and 80s.

“For DoubleTree by Hilton to bring one of its flagship hotels to Birmingham shows that it places the city in high esteem as a business and leisure destination.

“Its location, which is close to the business district, means it is perfect for business people needing somewhere for meetings and to have two Marco Pierre White venues also on site also gives the venue added kudos for those looking for somewhere to stay and eat when visiting the city.

“Work is progressing well and we are on schedule for an autumn opening. We are now putting in place the management team who will start recruiting the staff needed to run these iconic brands.”

“With the group also managing major elements at the Cube on Wharfside Street, including Hotel Indigo and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, shows the growing reputation of Black and White Hospitality not only in Birmingham but across the UK.”

Chad Murrin, director at St Chad’s (Birmingham) Hotel, the developer, added: “We have managed projects for clients both in the UK and internationally and we’re delighted to be involved in such a high-profile project. To bring such a well-regarded brand like DoubleTree to Birmingham is a great boost for the city.”
