Appointments: Retail chief joins Portmeirion board; partner hire at RSM; Colmore BID adds a Special Branch

Portmeirion Group, the Stoke-on-Trent manufacturer of homewares under the Portmeirion, Spode, Royal Worcester, Pimpernel and Wax Lyrical brands, has appointed Angela Luger as a non-executive director.

As Angela Spindler, she was previously chief executive of retail businesses N Brown and The Original Factory Shop and has held senior executive positions at Debenhams, Asda and Mars.

Dick Steele, Portmeirion’s non-executive chairman, said: “I am delighted that Angela has agreed to join the Group as a Non-Executive Director. Angela’s mix of retail, digital and customer focused experience is exactly the background that we have been seeking.”

RSM has recruited Peter Williams from Deloitte as a new VAT partner in its Birmingham office.

Williams started his career at HMRC more than 25 years ago and has spent the last 12 years as a director in Deloitte’s indirect tax practice.

The RSM indirect tax team in Birmingham now has three partners and two directors.

Mark Taylor, RSM’s regional managing partner for the central region, said: “His arrival is a further boost to our already powerful and growing indirect taxes team in the region.”

Paul Street, Colmore BID

Colmore BID has appointed a former Special Branch police officer to help support safety projects in Birmingham’s commercial district.

Paul Street was one of the lead officers tasked with setting up the West Midlands Counter-Terrorism Unit, the first regional unit in the UK.

He recently completed a 12-month contract delivering award-winning work for Soho Road BID after a career at West Midlands Police spanning 30 years, which culminated in a Commissioner’s Commendation.

Colmore BID recently secured by renewal ballot its third five-year term representing more than 500 businesses in the Colmore Row area of the city. The new term starts on April 1, 2019.

Alan Bain, chair of the BID’s Safe and Sound Working Group, said: “Paul’s appointment shows our commitment to providing even greater support to businesses in our third term. Paul brings with him a wealth of experience in counter-terrorism and community policing and I am looking forward to working with him and local businesses over the next five years.”
