More than 50 firefighters attended the blaze at the Holiday Inn Birmingam – Walsall, close to junction 10.
Nobody was injured in the fire which took hold at around 3.50pm on Friday afternoon.
The West Midlands Fire Service investigation confirmed the fire “started accidentally, in a sauna”.
In a statement, the hotel said: “The Holiday Inn Walsall hotel will be closed for some time.
“We appreciate that guests with future bookings at our hotel will have questions around what this means for them. We are in the process of contacting customers to amend or cancel their reservations and apologise sincerely for the inconvenience this will cause.”
They were rescued by a member of staff who got one out and then went back into the building to rescue the 2nd. They lost all possessions including their shoes and phones, but thanks to the staff and @WestMidsFire they are safe.
