Council makes final decision on controversial £27m transport plans

Perry Barr flyover

Birmingham City Council has given the green light on controversial plans for a £27m regeneration scheme in Perry Barr which involves knocking down the A34 flyover.

Protesters jeered as Birmingham City Council once again gave the go-ahead to the demolition of the Perry Barr flyover –  plans which had been put back before the cabinet over fears that petitions against the plans by residents had not been debated by the council.

In the proposed plans, the flyover will be torn down in favour of putting all traffic onto a dual carriageway at ground level.

A cycle path and improved public transport services also form part of the plans.

However, local residents claim the regeneration raises safety concerns for pedestrians and that the plans will increase congestion and remove valuable parking spaces.

The decision to approve the plans had been accelerated with the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the city in 2022.

Perry Barr is at the heart of the Commonwealth Games investment and will undergo significant change in the lead-up to 2022 and as part of the Games’ legacy.
