Plans submitted for 48-storey residential scheme

How the scheme would look

Court Collaboration has submitted its plans for a 48-storey Build To Rent scheme at the site of the former Irish Centre in Deritend.

The residential development, bounded by Stone Yard, Chapel House Street and fronting the busy B4100 (High Street Deritend), comprises 454 one and two-bed city apartments with around 10,000 sq ft of amenity space. The scheme includes a gym, a cinema, a sky lounge and bar and space for co-working.

Prior to submitting a planning application to Birmingham City Council, the Birmingham-based developer consulted with stakeholders and the local community, and cycle parking has been increased at the development as a result of the engagement. The scheme will not feature any car parking in line with the city’s greener aspirations and growing public transport network, with initial works to extend the Metro along the High Street already underway.

Alex Neale, managing director of Court Collaboration, said: “Our plans for the former Irish Centre have now been submitted to Birmingham City Council and we look forward to working closely with officers and members as we continue to progress through planning.

“The scheme will provide modern city living in a key location, complementing the surrounding area and various high-rise developments coming forward in Digbeth such as Connaught Square, Lunar Rise and the recently-consented Stone Yard. The ongoing investment and regeneration, and the combined ambition of these developments, represents a truly exciting time in the city.”

Speaking about the proposals, chief executive of Birmingham Irish Association, Maurice Malone, said: “This development is just the kind of investment we’ve been crying out for in the area and will be a fantastic asset. There have been many false dawns so we’re really hopeful that it and others like it will come to fruition and add to the evolving city centre skyline.”
