The Grand Hotel, housed in one of Birmingham’s most iconic buildings overlooking the city’s prestigious Colmore Row, will once again open its doors to the public next week following a £45m restoration project.

Closed since 2002, the 141-year-old landmark will open on Wednesday November 4.

The Grade II listed building will be home to 185 rooms and suites as well as the centrepiece Grosvenor ballroom.

The restoration also includes penthouse suites with views across St Phillip’s Cathedral, a sunken rooftop garden terrace, two new bars, restaurant, gymnasium, meeting rooms, collaboration areas and event spaces.

The hotel has enjoyed an illustrious past, having played host to a long list of royalty and famous names including King George VI, Malcolm X, Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill and James Cagney.

The hotel said: “Ahead of our grand opening next year, we’re opening our doors to guests from Wednesday 4th November, when you can be one of the first to see and experience the luxurious, £45m restoration and refurbishment of Birmingham’s original Grand Hotel.”

The venue said that for the first few months it will be open from noon on Tuesdays to check-out on Sundays, and will be closed over Christmas and the New Year from Sunday December 20, reopening Tuesday January 12.

Cody Bradshaw, managing director, head of international hotels at Starwood Capital Group, said: “We’re proud to be working with Hortons’ Estate, whose founder, Isaac Horton, originally built the hotel in the 1870s, on a shared vision to create one of the most prestigious hotels in the UK.

“The restoration of this stunning grande dame building is another milestone in what is an exciting period of transformation for this vibrant city. We look forward to providing visitors to Birmingham – and locals alike with a truly one-of-a-kind destination that celebrates the splendour of this landmark building but with a 21st-century luxury experience.”
