£12m redevelopment of former nightclub gets knocked back

Beneficial House

Plans to turn the former Snobs nightclub into 180 flats have been denied by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee.

Developer, Colico Living, says it will be re-submitting plans for the site in the centre of Birmingham after the “disappointing” decision at the premises known as the Beneficial Building, at 28 Paradise Street.

Colico’s proposals include a change of use from offices to residential together with a planning application for an additional storey of
accommodation added to the roof, a retail unit facing Paradise Street and facilities for residents including a roof terrace.

Beneficial House has an existing planning consent for a hotel, but with the onset of COVID-19 prominent hotelier Premier Inn pulled out from the project, leaving the site derelict.

The office building has been vacant for more than eight years.

Development director for Colico, Lisa Timberlake, said: “We strongly believe in Birmingham as a centre of business, culture and growth, and want to provide high-quality, inclusive city living for residents in this iconic building and am confident that our new application addresses the Council’s concerns.”

Colico says the development would cost around £12m.
