Film students launch production company

Two Leamington film students have launched a production company and are already securing work across the region.

Adam Hasan and Lily Shepherd have set up Purple Light Film Productions while studying for their BA Honours in Digital Film Production at Royal Leamington Spa College (part of WCG).

The duo has already been commissioned to produce music videos for local artists and have also been approached by local businesses, one being a commercial Barbers shop, to shoot promotional videos.

Recently the pair have worked on music videos for Lil $heep, Josh Holmes, and are in production at the moment with a short called Smoking Dogs ready for the festival circuit and a documentary called BLM, BAME, the system: A conversation.

To move with technical innovation, Purple Light has recently purchased a drone to support future projects and is in the process of acquiring a commercial drone pilot license.

Shepherd said: “There is a great creative community in Leamington and across the region, we’re building strong relationships with people in the community and this should give us good foundations to grow the company.

“We’re looking to set ourselves apart and that’s why we are looking to move into drone filming. Once we get our flight licence this will take us up another level.”

Hasan added: “It’s a great way for us to gain more experience and build our portfolios. The freelance market is very busy but we’ve had a great start and attracted some great clients to work with us.

“Our tutors have been incredibly supportive and helped us with any queries we have. The production company gives us a great platform to showcase the skills we have developed in the course.

“We were studying one day at the college and learning the ins-and-outs of marketing in the Pitching and Promoting Module. After some advice from our tutor, we went away and decided to set-up Purple Light Film Productions.”

Claire Lapworth, subject leader for film and media at Royal Leamington Spa College, said: “We encourage our students to use their skills for extra-curricular activity wherever they can and the creation of Purple Light Productions is a perfect example.

“The beauty of a course such as the BA Honours in Digital Film Production at Leamington provides students with full support to develop production and digital businesses such as Purple Lights due to our small student numbers combined with consistent access to tutors and equipment.

“Adam and Lily are in the final year of their course with us and have been fantastic since joining us, they are proactive and always willing to take advice, be that creatively or regarding their business.

“We look forward to seeing more work from their new production company in the future and will follow their development closely in the future.”
