Housebuilder reveals transformation of hospital

A housebuilder is breathing new life into Birmingham’s former Selly Oak hospital.
Ellis Court, a development by Charles Church, offers 44 one-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments with a study.
Two newly constructed wings lead out from the main central block that was part of the former infirmary.
Originally a Victorian workhouse, the building at the heart of Ellis Court subsequently became Selly Oak Infirmary, a forerunner to the world-leading Queen Elizabeth Hospital in nearby Edgbaston.
The development is named after Dr Frederick William Ellis, chief medical officer at the hospital over a century ago, who was lauded for his care and rehabilitation of the city’s sick and elderly citizens.
This week, the first show home was unveiled in the West Wing.
Charles Church, Central sales director Sarah Preston, said: “We are so proud to be working with such an interesting and historic building, breathing new life into its walls and adapting it to its new important role – creating a safe, high quality and welcoming place to live.”
