Public reminded to ‘use it or lose it’ as The Edgbaston Hotel closes

The Edgbaston Boutique Hotel & Cocktail Lounge will close its doors for good on Sunday the 27th of February.

The 20-bedroom hotel in Edgbaston offered classic cocktails, award-winning champagne afternoon tea and a Moet garden terrace.

Originally built in 1847, owners Stuart and Darren Install opened the 1920’s style venue in 2014 following the success of running award-winning Warwickshire boutique hotel and bar The Kenilworth.

In November, owners had been hit by a £12k debt by the council for its empty car park. The council claimed regardless of the hotel being shut in lockdown, the car park could have been run as its own car park business and therefore the rate was still charged.

Earlier in the year, Birmingham City Council had successfully sued the venue over a £5,680 rates bill.

The owners said they had not paid a penny of either bill in November.

Independent Birmingham said on Twitter: “The Edgbaston has been a stalwart of Birmingham’s independent scene for so many years and it’s shocking and massively upsetting to hear that such an established and much-loved independent is having to close.

“Once again, it’s time to remind everyone to use it or lose it.”
