Former steelworks site snapped up by housebuilder

A former steelworks site is set to be regenerated into housing after being bought by a developer.

Acting on behalf of Tata Steel (UK), Harris Lamb has sold the Cookley Works site in Brierley Hill to Lovell Homes for £4.5m, paving the way for the construction of 71 homes.

Lovell Homes is working in partnership with a registered housing provider to regenerate the site for new housing with work due to start on site in the summer.

The former steelworks site was used for the manufacture of metal containers for 150 years, with production ceasing in 2007 and the land remaining unused.

Chris Jones, residential land director at Harris Lamb, said: “Bringing a disused brownfield site back into beneficial use is always a rewarding result. In this case, Lovell will be providing quality new homes in an area where there is high demand for family housing impacted by limited land supply.

“Lovell Homes have put considerable resource and effort into making this site viable and have shown a high level of commitment and skill into bringing £17m worth of investment into the opportunity to bring it to fruition. We are delighted to have been involved in progressing another brownfield Midlands site for regeneration and the provision of much needed affordable housing.”
