Crippling costs force cocktail bars to close

Two Birmingham cocktail bars have revealed that they are closing after struggling with rising energy bills.

The owners of The Pineapple Club and its sister venue Shibuya Underground confirmed on Instagram the “heartbreaking” decision to cease trading.

Pineapple Club posted on its Instagram page: “We’re heartbroken to be writing this. Unfortunately The Pineapple Club has now ceased trading.

“We never had a good start opening right into lockdown, then government Covid policies, then stock increases, then train strikes, but we have kept fighting to offer the best we could. The straw which broke the camel’s back was energy bills, something we never thought would be a factor to our demise.

“The team is heartbroken, there has been a lot of tears. We hope you all enjoyed what we built and we’re sorry for the reservations we can no longer honour.”

While Shibuya Underground shared: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Shibuya Underground will no longer be opening. We have refunded all tickets to any events which will not go ahead.”

The Pineapple Club was recently voted the 14th best bar in the UK by The Top 50 Cocktail Bars list, it was one of only four Birmingham bars to make the list.
