Haulage firm to redevelop former Severn Trent land

A Severn Trent development site is set to be transformed into a haulage depot in Meir, Stoke-on-Trent.

The 4.35-acre brownfield site has been purchased by Potteries Heavy Haulage, a Stoke-on-Trent based family-owned business with more than 25 years’ experience moving abnormal and out of gauge loads throughout the UK and Europe.

The former Severn Trent land received planning consent in March, allowing a change in use to storage and distribution as well as enabling a building to be developed for vehicle maintenance, storage and improved driver facilities.

Potteries Heavy Haulage says this acquisition of land will allow the business to expand its operations which cover the UK and Europe.

Michael Edwards, business development manager of Potteries Heavy Haulage commented: “Once the land is developed it will enable us to reduce operational inefficiencies and grow. We’re looking forward to increasing our maintenance and storage offering to new and existing customers.

“We have looked at different options to relocate the business over the past few years due to lack of space and this site was an excellent opportunity due its size, locality, and access to the Strategic Road Network.

“There are many owner occupiers in Stoke-On-Trent and the wider area that are unable to grow due to lack of availability, so it’s fantastic to have this opportunity”.

Stewart Kellie, property development manager at Severn Trent said: “We are always pleased when redundant brownfield sites such as this can be repurposed to bring employment opportunities to the area and support economic growth.”

Caroline Penn-Smith, Partner in Carter Jonas’ Birmingham office who acted on behalf of Severn Trent said: “We received some very competitive offers for this parcel of land and are delighted to have completed the sale for our client. The reuse of this surplus Severn Trent Water site will support a growing local business and increase employment opportunities in Staffordshire.”
