A 301-bed student accommodation project in Birmingham is set to gain approval next Thursday at the City Council’s planning committee.

The scheme, proposed by Sama Investments, is part of a larger redevelopment of The Arcadian Centre and follows a revised planning application submitted earlier this month.

Located at the former Goods Yard on Pershore Street, the development will feature a stepped building design with sections of four, 10, and 15 storeys.

Plans were amended following comments from the City Design Officer about certain aspects of the scheme.

Key changes included increasing the number of purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) beds from 238 to 301 and extending the site to the corner of Cathay Street.

Site location plan

The development aims to create “a true gateway to the Arcadian” and support future redevelopment in the area, including sites opposite the development and the nearby Birmingham Indoor Market.

It has also received backing from LCP, the owner of the Arcadian, which praised the design’s potential to improve connectivity and contribute to the area’s ongoing transformation.

Students living in the development will have access to a range of amenities, including a social lounge, TV room, gym, workspaces, 64 cycle spaces, and a green roof on the fourth level.

The final decision will be made at the Birmingham City planning meeting on Thursday, 28th November.
