Royal Shakespeare Company to join £6m drive to revolutionise tech in creative industries

Royal Shakespeare Company

Stratford-upon-Avon Theatre company, The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is part of a £6.75m project to help tech firms and creatives incorporate new technologies, such as virtual reality, into live events and multi-platform content.

Led by Birmingham City University, the CreaTech Frontiers project includes the RSC alongside Birmingham Opera Group, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.

The RSC will bring its expertise in live performance to explore innovative uses of artificial intelligence, immersive content, and motion-capture technology, previously showcased in its 2021 production Dream for remote audiences during the pandemic.

It will also collaborate with the US-based tech and media festival South by Southwest on several research pilot projects.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) says these initiatives will “revolutionise creative productions,” with research also focusing on 3D modelling and animation to produce immersive material.

It comes shortly after RSC Chair Baroness Shriti Vadera was announced as co-leader of the Creative Industries Council, linking government, businesses, and public bodies in the UK’s creative sector.
