Building Briefs: GVA, CSC, Bournville College

PROPERTY professionals gathered in Birmingham to hear about the city’s attempts to lead the green development agenda.

The event heard from Cllr Paul Tilsley MBE, deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, who spoke about how the city was working towards its 2026 carbon reduction targets with initiatives such as district energy centres and the Birmingham Energy Savers programme.

Simon Jenner, a director at property investor Hines with responsibility for design and construction portrayed the development community’s view.

Miles Keeping and Christopher Hipkiss, directors with event hosts GVA, joined Brindleyplace operations and environmental manager Fiona Loveland to outline practical sustainability measures regarding property management.

Mr Keeping, director and head of sustainability for GVA, said: “We are currently working with occupiers and landlords across the UK to pioneer new ways of working to reduce the levels of carbon emitted by commercial buildings.”

CAPITAL Shopping Centres Group, owners of the The Potteries in Stoke and Victoria Centre in Nottingham, has announced executive director Kay Chaldecott is leaving on Friday, bring to an end 27 years with the company.

CSC has also appointed Mike Butterworth as chief operating officer who will report chief executive David Fischel, with effect from Monday.

Mr Butterworth was previously the chairman of CSC Trafford which incorporated four of the group’s centres in Bristol, Glasgow and two in Manchester.

CONSTRUCTION work on Bournville College has been completed, marking completion of the first phase of the new town centre in Longbridge.

Shepherd Construction carried out the £66m project on behalf of Birmingham-based developer St. Modwen Properties and the 250,000 sq ft building is now open to students.

The college was designed by international architecture practice Broadway Malyan and replaces the outgoing site opposite Bournville Police Station on the A38.
