EIC lands £800k Sikh temple deal

WARWICKSHIRE-based building services provider EIC has been chosen to provide a £800,000 mechanical services project at the UK’s largest Sikh temple as it builds a £7.5m community annexe.
The construction of the annexe at ‘Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick’, in Sandwell, will be carried out in two phases.
Alcester-based EIC will work in partnership with main contractor, Stourport outfit Thomas Vale Construction, during the first phase of work.
The project will double the size of the four-storey, 840,000 sq ft building, which is one of the oldest Sikh temples in the country.
EIC has been awarded a nine-month contract to design and install the mechanical and public health services of the temple’s new facilities which include an 800-seat dining hall, a wedding hall, a lecture theatre and classrooms.
The temple was bought in 1961 and is claimed to be the first in Europe to have been purchased for the sole purpose of worship by the Sikh community.
EIC director John Harris said: “This is a tremendously exciting project to be involved with as it will totally transform this incredible building.
“The Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick is one of the most prominent and influential Sikh Gurdwaras in the country so we are delighted to have been chosen to be a part of this project.”
