Wolves put stadium plans on the back burner

WOLVERHAMPTON Wanderers are to delay the second phase of the £18m redevelopment of Molineux.

Work would have started on the Steve Bull stand at the stadium at the end of this season but construction has been postponed and instead £6m will be put into developing the club’s new football academy at Compton Park and redeveloping the training ground.

Club chief executive Jez Moxey said: “The stadium redevelopment was always to be constructed in phases, each to be taken on its merits at the time.

“The board felt that if we didn’t proceed with the academy redevelopment we would never be able to revisit it, whereas the stadium was always planned to be a long-term project.

Development work is ongoing at Molyneux, however, in the shape of the new Stan Cullis stand. When it is finished the stadium capacity will be around 36,000. The redeveloped stand – being constructed by Buckingham Group – is due to be ready for the start of next season.
