Funding agreed for next phase of Wolves BSF programme

WORK is about to begin on the next phase of Wolverhampton’s £270m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
Funding has now been agreed and contracts signed for the work, including the redevelopment of one school and major improvements of four others, as the transformation of secondary education in the city continues.
The £27m improvements, which will be completed by the end of 2013, include the redevelopment of St Edmund’s Catholic High School, the refurbishment of Colton Hills Community School, improvements at Moreton Community School and the refurbishment of Our Lady & St Chad Catholic Sports College.
The schools form part of Phase Two of the BSF programme, plans for which were approved by councillors in December. Financial close – the point at which all finances are identified and allocated – was reached last month and contracts signed soon after.
Councillor Phil Page, Wolverhampton City Council’s cabinet member for schools, skills and learning, said: “We have reached another very important milestone in Wolverhampton’s Building Schools for the Future programme and I am delighted that work is about to get underway on these five very important schemes.
Meanwhile, work on the BSF programme’s Sample Phase and Phase One schemes is progressing well and preparatory work for Phase Three, the final phase of the £270m BSF programme, is already underway which will lead to improvements at another 13 secondary schools and education centres in the city. Work on those schools is expected to be completed in 2014.
