Baker uses his loaf to establish new cookery school

A NEW social enterprise cookery school offering classes in everything from bread making to food foraging has launched in Birmingham.
The Stirchley-based Loaf Cookery School is the brainchild of city-based baker, Tom Baker and is the latest venture to emerge from his Loaf Social Enterprise Ltd.
The Loaf Cookery School is designed to give budding amateur chefs the opportunity to develop an array of culinary competencies including bread making, meat butchery, pasta making and foraging for safe, wild food.
Courses at the brand new £200,000 facility are already in big demand with the first 15 students graduating this month from the school’s new bakery course.
Mr Baker, who runs Loaf with six other directors, said: “The Loaf Cookery School is a place where you can learn forgotten food skills through a variety of courses. It will also act as a food hub with the on-site community bakery and whole food co-operative shop an essential part of that experience.
“We already have lots of enquiries and bookings for the various courses and we will be adding more courses in the future including a fish mongering course and a festive breads class.
“I would also like to thank Everards for their investment into the cookery school and the assistance they have provided in helping set up the project.”
Everards have invested into the project by providing the building housing Loaf Cookery School and Bakery. The firm has partnered with Loaf as part of a commitment to support local producers and suppliers – a similar project at Everards pub The Bakers Arms in Leicestershire has already proved popular with students attending bread making classes.
